In Case of power cut...

To say that it’s a little breezy here in Herefordshire would be a bit of an understatement. I’m half expecting a little old lady to fly past in a rocking chair with her knitting! More likely the power will go out at some point so I’m finding myself charging my phone and putting candles in every room.

If you should also find yourself without power this weekend here are a few tips that may help pass the time

  • Switch your mobile to airplane mode – (hopefully your land-line will still be working as this works on a separate system) People will no longer be able to contact you but it means that your battery will last long enough to make that emergency out call. Feel free to keep your phone like this if you don’t want anyone to contact you after the power has come back on.

  • Use candles to light your home – obviously don’t put them any ware that will catch fire!

No candles?  A wax crayon will burn for about 30mins.

  • Put on a shadow play – its loads of fun (remember there’s no iplayer) all you need is a torch or candle and a wall. Oh and hands.... if you don’t have any hands use a friends hands.

Here is a helpful shadow puppet how to;

  • No way of heating food?  Chances are the cut is localised, order pizza.

  • Put the first aid kit in an obvious place - don’t go calling 999 because you tried to find it in the garage/shed/utility room, tripped over the dog and broke your leg, all because you needed a plaster. If in doubt, light more crayons.

  • Paint all the doorways in your home with glow in the dark paint, then when the power goes out you can still see the exit. Awesome job Sheldon.

But why let the fun stop there...

  • Keep your freezer cold - If you think it is likely that there will be a power cut, fill all available space in your freezer with bottles of water. Not only will this make it run more efficiently but it will keep your food frozen for longer in the event of the power being off for a long time.

  • Reset your alarms – remember to reset your alarms if they run off the mains power or you may be late for work in the morning. Actually that isn’t a bad idea......*turns off alarm*

  • Want an awesome bath? - snap some glow sticks and pretend your on Pandora.

  • Please check on elderly and vulnerable neighbours – they may not have access to such awesome power cut tips.
  • Have fun! - Enjoy being off grid, It seems to happen so rarely now a days.
